About the tunnel
Across town - only under
In 2011, the fi rst scheduled train will leave the new underground station at Malmö Central. It will travel 25 m below ground, through the Citytunnel, via Triangeln Station all the way to Hyllie Station. After 6 km in a tunnel, it will reach the surface in southern Malmö. The railway will divide here and go west towards the Öresund Bridge, south towards Trelleborg and east towards Ystad.
The Citytunnel will change Malmö Central from the current dead-end station to a through-station. Travelling times will be reduced considerably and there will be two more stations in Malmö city.
MCG’s area of responsibility
The Citytunnel is a generic term for the new connection between Malmö Central and the existing railway south of Malmö. It is a big project, with a total of 17 km of railway above and below ground. Malmö Citytunnel Group, MCG, is responsible for the E201 contract.
Contract E201
- Two bored 4.6 km long single-track tunnels
- 1 km ramp and cut-and-cover tunnel at Hyllie
- The rock chamber for Triangeln Station
- 13 cross-tunnels
- Two access shafts
- Four pressure-equalizing shafts
Main tunnels, cross-tunnels and access shafts
The Citytunnel is made of two parallel tunnels with an inner diameter of 7.9 m. The distance between the tunnels varies between 10 and 30 m and they are linked by 13 cross/evacuation tunnels at 300 to 400 metre intervals. In addition, there are two access shafts going up to the surface. Together with Triangeln Station, that means there is access to the surface for every quarter of the tunnel. Most of the Citytunnel is 25 metres below the surface.
