Triangeln Station

The size of a football pitch, 25 metres below ground.

Triangeln Station is in the centre of Malmö and halfway along the Citytunnel line. It will bring better transport links for the people who live in the area and for visitors to central Malmö. The construction, in a cramped city environment, is technologically and logistically very demanding for MCG. It’s a very big construction project that must be noticed as little as possible.

The starting points are two 25 m deep pits 200 m apart. Between the two pits, a rock chamber has been excavated. The rock chamber will become a 250 m long section of the Citytunnel where the two tracks are separated by a platform. The rock chamber will be sealed with shotcrete and in situ concrete lining. So the rock chamber had to be finished before the tunnel boring machines arrived. Entrances and exits will be constructed in the two pits to connect the platform with the surface. Triangeln Station will have two entrances: one by St. Johannes Church and one 200 m south of that at Smedjegatan. The rock chamber will be about 27 m wide and 12 m high. It will be twice the volume of St. Johannes Church!

Pressure equalization shafts

Just north and south of Triangeln Station, pressure equalization shafts are being built to connect the tunnels with the surface. The function of the shafts is to eliminate the “air cushion” that would otherwise create excess pressure in the station every time a train arrives.
