A Rare Visitor in Northern Harbour
On January 19th, this rare visitor – a razorbill – was seen in Northern Harbour. The bird is most common in the Arctic Circle where it breeds in colonies on bird rocks along with the puffin and the guillemot. The Razorbill is a very good swimmer and diver and a fairly fast flyer. It feeds mainly on fish but also on sea-living crustaceans and worms. It only lays one very large greyish-white and dark speckled egg on a rock-ledge or in a rock crevice. With this in mind one wonders if it will stay for very long.
